No Logo

A couple of days ago I decided to update my business card to reflect the fact that my choices in development environments have increased. As I have been doing for years, I wanted to include the logos of the main environments I work with. Since I have been a Certified Lotus Professional for some years, I of course use that logo. Although there is no certification process for Rails™ (yet) I thought I could use the Rails™ logo as well. However, knowing that it is trademarked by DHH, I thought it would be proper to ask his permission first. After several rounds, it became clear that the objections were sufficiently large that it would be far simpler to not use the logo at all. His last email to me explained the core of the objection clearly:

"It really isn't clear what those logos mean from the business card. The Rails logo has to be framed in a way like "Working with" or "Offering services for". As it is now, it could very much just look like Kinetic Systems is the creator of Lotus and Rails."

Personally, I do't believe many people would think that an unknown developer using an unknown company name is likely to have created either Lotus Notes or Ruby on Rails™, but that's just me.
