Rails Project Night

Last night I attended the first monthly Rails Project Night at TSOT. Andrew Burke gave the main presentation. He talked about starting his new company, Shindig Digital Construction Inc. I've known Andrew for at least 8 years. We worked together on a variety of Notes and WebSphere projects at PG Communications. Even back then, he was writing and supporting his Sign Ordering System. Over the past couple of years he has re-written it with Rails.

His presentation was very interesting. Even though I had a private review of the new Store Ordering System some time ago, I learned quite a bit. In particular, I think that the existence of a vertical-market oriented application like this significantly validates Rails as a business-ready environment.

Joey deVilla of TSOT was the MC and started the night off with a very entertaining monologue. He had some insightful observations about Zed Shaw's Rant. After Andrew, Hampton Catlin demonstrated ZipLocal. The evening was rounded out by Mike Ferrier and his demonstration of The Score's iPhone interface. I'm looking forward to the next iteration in February.
