Ottawa 10k

Jayne and I ran the Ottawa 10k on the 25th with our friends TJ and Irena. We stayed at Jayne's mom's place in Renfrew, then spent Saturday picking up our race kits, touring the Runner's Expo, wandering near the Parliament Buildings, then running the race. There were over 7,000 people in the 5k, which started an hour earlier. There were over 8,000 in the 10k. It was by far the most crowded race I've run.

The biggest challenge was trying to pass people. Irena was intending to stay with me, as we had similar time goals. However, I lost her within the first kilometre. Taking every opportunity to spurt past people, it was almost impossible to stay together. I ran faster than I probably should have, and found it very difficult, especially between 8 and 9k. In the end, I finished at 58:52.4, under the hour which was my goal. That put me at 2197 out of 3162 males, and 142 / 235 in my age range.

Considering how difficult I found the 10k, I will probably stay in the 5k range. I get the health and social benefits I want with that range, without the extensive time commitment required to excel at the greater lengths.
