I have one of the few 'cellos that my father made. I don't play the instrument, but a while ago I went to tune it and found that the sound post was not set in the correct position. I put it aside, and finally got back to trying to reset the post today.
The first part of the task is to retrieve the post from the incorrect position. Knocking it over wasn't a problem, but getting it out of the instrument proved a bit awkward. As it turned out, that was the hardest part of the process. Once I had the post out, I was able to reset it in short order, using a combination of a classic and a scissors-style post setter.
Jayne asked my mother if my father had done it this way. The answer was short and direct.... "No".
