I had a piece of Walnut laying around that I didn't have a specific use for. In a magazine that Dave Murray loaned me some time ago was a project for a small jewelry box. Using one of the LED light base router templates, I routed out a hollow in the walnut. I purchased a piece of Red Gum for the top, and found a warped Ebony fingerboard that I used for the top accent piece.
The result is pretty much what I had in mind. I applied 4 coats of Varathane, with no stain. The Red Gum in particular looks very nice. I still haven't mastered applying a finish without leaving marks, so there are a few visible on the Red Gum. I routed the channel for the Ebony just a bit wider than I should have, so I filled the gaps with a copper-coloured mold material. I wanted it to look like a copper insert, and I suppose it does.
