This week I completed the Olive stopper. It wasn't without challenges, as expected.
Suprisingly the bark inclusion wasn't a problem. I used the metal cutter to approximate the tapers I wanted, then used a wood chisel free-hand (on the lathe) to smooth everything out. I must have applied a bit too much pressure at one point, because I suddenly had a very short stump of wood on the mandrel, and the larger piece lying on the lathe bed. I was planning on removing that rather boring part anyway, this forced the decision.
I deepened the mandrel mounting hole free-hand on the drill press, then cut the broken end free-hand on the bandsaw. It ended up surpisingly close to perpendicular. Turning down and sanding the remainder was then straightforward. The sanding was done with a strip of sandpaper hand-held to accomodate the curves in the piece.
The finish was the same Turner's Polish from Lee Valley that I used on my Christmas project.
The other part of this week's project was attaching the belly to the rib garland on violin #6. It went smoothly, apart from running out of violin clamps and having to use three cello clamps.
